Laurent Gbagbo, the former president of Ivory Coast, has consented to run for president of his party in the 2025 elections.
Gbagbo created the African People’s Party – Cote d’Ivoire (PPA-CI), whose spokesperson is Katinan Kone. Kone announced the announcement following a meeting of the party’s central committee on Saturday.
While incarcerated in the Netherlands awaiting trial for several years, he lost control of the party he had previously created, the Ivorian Popular Front (IPF), although he is thought to still have a sizable and devoted following at home.
The nation in west Africa is anticipated to hold its next election in October 2025. Re-elected in 2020, President Alassane Ouattara, 82, has not yet declared his intention to run for office again.
